Rolled Brim Baby Hat with a Topknot

babyhat

This cute little hat is quick and easy!  You can whip one up in an evening and take it to a baby shower the next day!  This little cap is knit  "in the round", with a rolled brim, a heart pattern knit around the cap (or any colorwork pattern that's a multiple of 2, 4, or 8 stitches will work), and an I-cord 'topknot'.

This should fit a baby from 0-6 months, but I didn't have a baby head to try it
on.  When I block my hats, I blow up a balloon to what I seem to remember
is a baby size head.

Here's what you'll need:
1 skein worsted wt. yarn (I used Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted oddballs; 1/2 skein of the MC), plus small amount of contrasting color for the hearts
Size 7 double point and 16" size 7 circular  needles (I worked most of the hat on a #7 16" circular needle, then
switched to the dps when I got to the decrease section).
1 stitch marker.

Gauge:  4 sts=1" on #7 needles (this would give you an 18" circumference)

Using #7 circular needles, Cast on 72 sts in main color.  Place your marker at beginning of round. Working in the round, and knitting every round,
knit 20 rounds.  Your brim should be rolling up as you work.  Work heart design
in contrasting color:

Start at bottom of chart and work over 8 stitches & repeat around  Here are written instructions:
Row 1: *k3 MC, k1 CC, k4 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 2: *k2 MC, k3 CC, k3 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 3: *k1 MC, k5 CC, k2 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 4: *k7 CC, k1 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 5: *k3 CC, k1 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 6: *k1 MC, k1 CC, k3 MC, k1 CC, k2 MC; repeat from * around.

Christmas Tree Motif

This is a 7 stitch repeat, as is the heart motif, so either can be used without having to make any changes in stitch count.  Here are written instructions:
Row 1-3:  *K3 MC, K1 brown, k4 MC, rep from * around
Row 4:  *K7 Green, K1 MC
, rep from * around
Row 5: *K1 MC, K5 Green, K2 MC, rep from * around
Row 6: *K2 MC, K3 Green, K3 MC, rep from * around
Row 7: *K3 MC, K1 Green, K4 MC, rep from * around

Pumpkin Motif.

NOTE:  I haven't tried these yet, so I can't tell you how they'll actually look!  If anyone has pictures of hats they've made using these motifs please send them.

Continue in MC until hat measures about 4 1/2" from the bottom of the rolled
brim (in other words, DON'T unroll the brim to measure!), then begin
decreasing:

1st dec row:  k6, k2tog, repeat around
2nd dec row: k5, k2tog, repeat around
3rd dec row:  k4, k2tog, repeat around
4th dec row:  k3, k2tog, repeat around
5th dec row:  k2, k2tog, repeat around
6th dec row:  k1, k2tog, repeat around
7th dec row:  k2 tog, repeat around

You should have 9 sts on 3 needles.  Work around on these sts for 3 1/2".
Bind off.  Tie the long "stem" into a knot.  Weave in loose ends.  Find a baby
to adorn!

I have successfully used worsted weight wools (Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride is my favorite) , La Gran mohair, handspun angora (so soft for some
lucky baby!) and a good quality chenille for my hats, and all turned out great.
If you do use a thicker yarn, you might need to make your "stem" longer, as it
can be difficult to tie the knot if the yarn isn't as stretchy.  Also, the
mohair and the chenille made a larger hat.

New!~ 'Pithy' instructions for making the hat in larger sizes!

What you need to do is get the head measurement for each child.  Let's say the one year old has a 25" head.  And let's say you are knitting with a worsted weight yarn, gauge is 4 sts=1".

25 X 4 = 100 STS.  You'll need to subtract some of these stitches so the hat fits properly (if you knit it the exact same size as the head, it will be too big!)  I usually figure about 20% of the stitches is the right amount to subtract; in this example, that's -20 stitches.  So you will cast on 80 stitches and work as the original pattern instructions describe.  You'll need to make the hat 'deeper' or longer before you start the decreases; here's a link to a site with the average heights and circumferences for children's head sizes:

Decreasing and finishing would be the same.
